The effect of self-esteem and anxiety on dental fear of some university students

Abstract

|
Objectives: This aim of this study was to examine the effect of self-esteem and anxiety on dental fear of some university students.
Methods: The study was carried out among 300 university students in Busan and Gyeongnam of Korea province, from September 1 to 15 October, 2019. Study subjects were selected using the non-probability sampling method. The survey was composed of 6 questions on the socio-demographic characteristics of the study subjects, 5 questions regarding oral health behaviors, 10 questions regarding self-esteem, and 10 questions regarding anxiety, and 20 questions regarding dental fear. IBM SPSS Statistics 20.0 was used for the statistical analysis. Descriptive statistics analysis, t-test and correlation analysis were conducted.
Results: There was a negative correlation between self-esteem and dental fear in some university students. In multivariate analysis, anxiety was significantly associated with dental fear (¥â=0.548, p£¼0.001). However, self-esteem was not significantly associated with dental fear (¥â=0.054 p=0.569).
Conclusions: Therefore, this study showed that self-esteem and dental fear have negative effect on some university students. This study can be used as basic data to improve self-esteem and dental fear treatment in university students.
